As children, my siblings and I were told to always work hard, be honest, and get a good education. These values are American values; the values that have made America strong and sustained our democratic society. At the core of these values lies a free public education system, open to all. Strong Neighborhood Schools are crucial if we are to uphold this ideal. Research shows that parental and community involvement are crucial elements to maximize the academic achievement of children.
Over the last decade the Denver Public Schools have destroyed communities by closing neighborhood schools. The school board has made it difficult for parents to participate in their child’s education because their school has been replaced with a charter school which their child may not be eligible to attend. We must STOP the closure of neighborhood schools and bring back our community schools as centers for learning and activity for the whole community.
