Our democracy is under attack by people like DeVos who do not value a public education system that affords every child access and an equitable education regardless of zip code. The use of taxpayer dollars to purchase management services and to dictate what our children will and will not learn in the charter schools has led to underfunding of Denver’s district-run schools. This focus on having “choices” or alternatives has led to high stakes testing by which the school district can categorize schools’ academic performance. Emphasis on student performance ratings are then used by the board to determine school closures as well as teacher performance.
If we are to fight the elitist mentality and return to believing in the value of all students to society, we must say “NO” to DeVos’ agenda to corporatize public education. The Denver Public Schools ARE NOT FOR SALE!
